Taking Care After Tooth Extraction: What You Need to Know

Tooth extraction is a common dental procedure, but proper aftercare is essential to ensure smooth healing and prevent complications. Immediately after the extraction, your dentist will place a gauze pad over the area to help stop the bleeding. It’s important to bite down gently but firmly on the gauze and keep it in place for at least 30–45 minutes. Avoid rinsing your mouth, drinking through a straw, or spitting forcefully during the first 24 hours, as these actions can dislodge the blood clot and lead to a painful condition called dry socket.

Pain and swelling are natural parts of the healing process. You can manage these symptoms with over-the-counter painkillers as recommended by your dentist and by applying an ice pack to the outside of your face in 15-minute intervals during the first day. Stick to soft foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, or soup, and gradually return to your regular diet as you feel more comfortable. Make sure to keep your head elevated when lying down, and avoid any strenuous physical activity for at least 24–48 hours.

Maintaining good oral hygiene is still important, but you’ll need to be gentle around the extraction site. After the first day, you can rinse your mouth with a saltwater solution to help keep the area clean, but avoid brushing the socket directly. Follow all your dentist’s instructions, and attend any follow-up appointments if necessary. With the right care, most people recover from a tooth extraction within a week or two without any issues.
